This is day 2 of our Kinshasa–Muanda in 8 days, after Mbanza-Ngungu. The day is organised by our contact at the Kikame agency, who also handles the Kisantu botanical garden.
The Kwilu-Ngongo sugar factory can be visited with a member of the agency, a partner of the site. Without a contact, it’s simply impossible to get in.
Box
Kwilu-Ngongo is sugar cane country, and therefore agricultural rum country. Locally, you find it in jerrycans: we brought back some “Kwilu Rhum Bonobo”, a special edition.
The price is worth the trip: 5 litres for $30. If you’re after cheap agricultural rum, now’s the time to buy. At worst, there are resellers in Kinshasa.
We turned it into our infused rum: the rum in the jerrycan, then add Kongo Central fruit, lime, sugar cane…
Alcohol abuse is dangerous for your health; drink responsibly.
